McLaughlin states in the inlay that he wanted to write something that babies will enjoy and parents won’t want to stamp on, and he achieves this near-impossible task, with gentle, folky acoustic guitars and dulcet xylophone sounds that draw heavily on the canon of traditional lullabies. As you’d expect from McLaughlin there are some jazz and world music, especially Indian, influences evident in songs like “Twinkle Town Waltz” which make this an interesting exercise in reinterpretation of McLaughlin’s career. Interesting too are the two lullabies personal to his own children “Sleep Easy Baby Girl” and “Sleep Easy Baby Boy”. It’s hard to write non-schmaltzy lullaby lyrics but McLaughlin’s recall the painfully protective love only felt when looking at your sleeping child.
