Worlds within worlds. Since 2010, Helsinki-based media artist and music producer Mikko H. Haapoja has recorded nature and urban sounds around the globe. By mixing multiple sonic environments together, Haapoja creates unheard worlds. In his first solo album Unheard Landscapes, Finnish traditional bowed lyres (jouhikko) and kantele, alongside electronic beats, connect this sonic mixture to the living tradition of ours.
Unheard Landscapes music was originally composed for Contemporary Circus Performance Fragile, premiered in September 2022 in Culture Centre Caisa, Helsinki. Also one of the cellos of Stream in the City was recorded live in the premiere.
The medley These Shorelines–These Waves is a new collage version of the 19-minute piece Our Shorelines (2020). Part of the jouhikko layers were recorded in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, while part of them were recorded live in the CChanges concert in Helsinki Central Library Oodi in November 2019.
Most of the Unheard Landscapes music has been recorded at Haapojan studio in Helsinki 2019-2023. Soundscapes of the album have been captured all over the world. The whole album starts from the banks of the River Niger, while in the middle of Flowing and Bending we hear icy seashore waves from Helsinki and later crowded places from Urubamba, Peru and Bamako, Mali. These Shorelines combines sounds from various coastal cities like Tokyo, Helsinki and New York.
Bass bowed lyre, bowed lyre, cello, vocals, kantele, beats, synth and soundscapes by Mikko H. Haapoja. Stream in the City kantele layers by Sarah Palu.
