Liner notes in English (printed also in Finnish and in Swedish):
“What is avant-garde in music? In Western European music circles this term was adopted about 1950 to describe new developments in concert music. It meant that experimenting musically was rising in value: new technical equipment was taken into use (electronic and concrete music) and new principles of structure and form were tried (serial and aleatoric music). Esthetically this music stayed closely within the traditions of Western European art music.
During the Sixties the forefront of contemporary pop and jazz has developed musically to the same level, and maybe even beyond the point that had been reached by this West-European “avantgarde”. In the technical area this produced results similar to those achieved in concert music. In addition to this one can see a strong desire for esthetical revival in pop and jazz unparalleled in the classical field.
The Student Union of the University of Helsinki which is celebrating its 100-year anniversary this year has produced this record to support avant-garde music in Finland. The compositions chose have been selected from the most significant products of Finnish music today.”
