Minä loitsun laululle, joka yön yli kiirii.
Minä loitsun ikuiselle rakkaudelle.
Meille kaikille minä loitsun.”
“I enchant for life, to a new morn.
I enchant for the song that travels through the night.
I enchant for eternal love.
For us all I enchant.”
TWO STORIES, SHARED ROOTS
The collaboration between Jukka Linkola and Female Choir KYN began already in the beginning ofthe 1990s. Linkola’s music has been an integral part of the choir’s repertoire ever since.
In 2010, KYN commissioned music from Linkola bringing about Outo kantele (Strange Kantele), suite composed for female choir and jazz ensemble based on texts from the collection off Folk poetry the Kanteletar. Five movements of the suite were recorded for the album Virtaan in 2011. Now the seven movement suite is heard in its entirety with a new orchestration: choir, accordion and
piano. The suite is characterized by the varied rhythmic patterns and rich harmony of ethnic jazz.
Outo kantelc looks through the past to the future as old texts are transformed into fresh music.
Loitsut (Incantations) is a nine movement a cappella suite for female choir. The music and texts invite us to marvel and rejoice at the little everyday occurences, the surrounding nature and the people close to us. The vibraphone solos composed by Jukka Linkola and the improvisation by Panu Savolainen bring a spirit of enchantment to the piece.
Outo kantele and Loitsut are two female choir suites that differ in style but Share an intense atmosphere. Both challenge the Choir to a newkind of expression and use of voice. I hope that the listener can experience the same feeling of joy and empowerment as we did while making this album.
