All the pieces on the Immigrant Garden audio CD are based on audio material recorded directly form plants. The recording method used was developed by Jagadish Bose in India in the ’20s-’30s and Ivan Gunar in the Soviet Union in the ’60s-’70s, who explored techniques of measuring the electrophysiology of plants. As a result, a sonic equivalent of a kirlian photograph is recorded, a kind of sonic aura. All the plants recorded for the CD are also presented in Kalle Hamm’s and Dzamil Kamanger’s environmental artwork Immigrant Garden, where plants are used as a metaphor for refugees and immigrants. The Immigrant Garden audio CD questions the plants as mute and senseless beings without any feelings. At the same time, it literally gives a voice to the otherness.
