Pre-order: Aleksandra Ionowa – Improvisations on the Grand Piano COLOUR
Aleksandra Ionowa (1899–1980) was a Finnish-Russian artist, mystic, and largely self-taught pianist whose music feels like a transmission from another realm. Her artistic life began in 1946, after what she described as a mystical experience of heavenly union—“Heaven was in me, I was in heaven.” In its wake, she began to draw obsessively, eventually creating thousands of visionary works that she considered guided by the Theosophical Masters. The same experience also led her to start improvising on the piano, shaping music that, for its time, was unusually free and abstract. Recorded on a November day in 1978, when Aleksandra Ionowa was 79 years old, Improvisations on the Grand Piano is a meditative and deeply intuitive album, shaped more by timbre and tone than by melody. Her shimmering playing unfolds like flashes of light through leaves, or sunbeams playing on rippling water: a music of transience and transformation, yet carrying a timeless stillness at its core. To today’s listener, her pentatonic piano stylings might feel kindred to the spiritual intimacy of artists like Laraaji and Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou, while remaining wholly her own. Originally self-released on vinyl and cassette, the album is reissued for the first time in co-operation with Ultraääni Records and Puro Recordings. This new edition is available on standard black 180g vinyl and a limited splatter-colored 180g version. The release also includes additional artwork and a newly commissioned essay by Samuli Huttunen, offering historical and spiritual context for her work.Out 26.9.2025 on Puro Recordings & Ultraääni Records. Pietu Arvola – Silmät sulaa
Described by Arvola as his “summer album,” Silmät sulaa (Eyes Melt) is less a pastoral escape and more a hallucinatory collage of fragmented nostalgia. Composed over two winter months in early 2024, the album unfolds like a fever dream, where memories of blissful family summer holidays collide with impressions of a burning childhood home and the harrowing yellow gleam of melting candy eyeballs. The record arcs from the luscious ambient string motifs of Side A into a side B that spirals into a more unstable, otherworldly terrain. Utilizing a tactile arsenal of daxophone, Cocoquantus, and modular synthesis, Arvola sometimes processes these textures through reel-to-reel tape, allowing the compositions to slowly unravel and decay. It is a brilliant, uneasy study of memory refracted through a lens of modern experimentalism. Matt Gold & Dustin Laurenzi – Devotional Fade
Black vinyl, matte sleeve & protective inner sleeve. Out 24.4.2026 on We Jazz Records. Matt Gold and Dustin Laurenzi present Devotional Fade, a collaborative record of electroacoustic rhythmic improvisations – equal parts meditation and dance, released on We Jazz Records, 24th April. Laurenzi and Gold, key collaborators in the Chicago creative scene and with genre spanning artists such as Bill Callahan and Makaya McCraven, step forward here with a major artistic statement, a product of extended improv sessions capturing the duo’s hypnotic interplay. This is the sound of two of Chicago’s most vibrant instrumental voices listening deeply, communing in sound. Recorded in Laurenzi’s attic studio, Devotional Fade emerged from a series of weekly sessions over the course of a single month. The duo kept the tape rolling continuously each day and selected a number of immersive sonic worlds to present, oscillating between patient, sacred minimalism and wild, dancefloor-worthy combustion. The pair set two parameters to heighten the sessions’ stakes: editing would be kept to a minimum, and a rule of “no pitched overdubs” was put in place – ensuring that all melodic and harmonic gestures would have to be committed in real time. Laurenzi and Gold held true, only sparingly adding a stray shaker or brush to these already largely complete improvisations. Devotional Fade is imbued with quiet propulsion and ecstatic repetition. Dustin Laurenzi; tenor saxophone, clarinet, synthesizers Matt Gold; electric bass, drum machine, percussion Composed by Dustin Laurenzi and Matt Gold Recorded by Dustin Laurenzi and Matt Gold in Chicago, IL Mixed by Dave Vettraino Mastered by David Allen Design by Matti Nives -
